About Marquetry

Marquetry is a technique of using wood inlays to create art pieces such as portraits, objects, landscapes or landmark scenery. This technique can be applied to create scenes, motif or patterns on furniture. There is no painting involved, the artist uses solid and wood veneers. A touch of pyrography (wood burning) is added to accentuate finer details and make shadow effect.

Artist Statement

I always wanted to reflect nature’s beauty through arts. My inspiration came from past experience with drafting, painting and woodworking. Thus by combining these skills with the ancient art form of Marquetry, it gave me the opportunity to create realistic images by truly reflecting nature in using solid wood, veneers or combination. In addition, a pyrography technique (drawing with heat) is applied to complement my work.

I like to bring out the character of my subject by effectively utilizing wood grain, tones and shades to give the illusion of depth, life and movement. All my Marquetry is created using manual tools and my art pieces contain veneer or solid wood from local to across the world. I recycled this wood into an art creation, therefore giving it an extended life. I permeates my passion for art by making every piece of wood reveal its natural beauty and to depict lifelike impressions.

I want to ‘invite’ you to see and feel beyond the wood and find the effect of life that is depicted. This is the way I would like my artwork to be experienced.
